Lancers! With the brand new release of Storm Lancers for Steam, we're introducing a brand new way to play with Steam Remote Play. Where you can turn your couch co-op experience into an online game session for you and a friend!
What Is Steam Remote Play Together?
Steam Remote Play Together is a streaming feature that lets one player (the host) run a local co‑op game on their PC and stream it to friends over the internet.
Key Features:
- Only the host needs to own Storm Lancers on Steam.
- Guests can join from Windows, Linux, macOS, phones, tablets, and some TVs via the Steam or Steam Link apps.
- You can invite friends from your Steam friends list or by sharing a join link.
What You Need Before You Start
Before launching a run in Storm Lancers, make sure you and your friend meet these requirements.
For the host:
- A Steam account with Storm Lancers in the library and installed.
- A Windows PC capable of running the game smoothly.
- A stable wired or strong Wi‑Fi connection; Valve recommends at least 10 Mbps upload for a smooth experience with Remote Play Together.
For the guest:
- A Steam account or the ability to join via a shareable link (no purchase needed).
- The Steam client on PC, or the Steam Link app on mobile, tablet, or TV device.
- A controller or keyboard/mouse input method supported by their device.
-
Optional but recommended:
• Both players using wired Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi.
• Headsets instead of speakers to reduce echo, plus Steam’s built‑in voice chat.
Enabling Remote Play in Steam:
Step 1 – Enable Remote Play in Steam
The host should enable Remote Play globally in Steam before starting Storm Lancers.
- Open Steam and log in.
- Go to Steam > Settings > Remote Play.
- Check “Enable Remote Play” (wording may vary slightly by client version).
- Optionally, open “Advanced Host Options” to tweak streaming quality if you have slower internet.
Once this is enabled, any compatible local co‑op game, including Storm Lancers, can use Remote Play Together.
Step 2 – Start Storm Lancers in Local Co‑op Mode
Storm Lancers is designed for two‑player couch co‑op, so you start just like a local session and then add Remote Play on top.
- Launch Storm Lancers from your Steam Library.
- From the main menu, select the local co‑op option (e.g., “Co‑op” or similar label depending on the final UI).
- Make sure your own controller and/or keyboard are recognized on the title screen before inviting anyone.
At this stage the game is ready for a second local player; Steam Remote Play Together will treat your friend as that second player.
Step 3 – Invite a Friend with Remote Play Together
Once the game is running and you are on the main menu or in your hub area, you can invite a friend.
Method A – Invite from Overlay (friends with Steam):
- While Storm Lancers is running, press Shift + Tab to open the Steam overlay.
- Open your Friends List in the overlay.
- Right‑click the friend you want to play with.
- Select “Remote Play Together” from the context menu.
- Your friend will receive an invite pop‑up in Steam chat; once they accept, they connect to your session.
Method B – Invite with a shareable link:
- Open the Steam overlay while Storm Lancers is running.
- In the Friends List or the Remote Play Together panel, look for an option to “Copy Link” or similar (available in newer Steam builds).
- Send that link to your friend via chat, email, or any messaging app.
- Your friend opens the link with the Steam desktop client or Steam Link app and joins your session.
- Guests who join this way do not need to own Storm Lancers as long as they connect through your invite.
Step 4 – Assign Controllers and Inputs
Once your friend has joined, Steam treats them like a local player sitting next to you.
- Steam automatically maps your guest’s controller or keyboard to an additional local slot in Storm Lancers.
- In the overlay, you can open the Remote Play Together panel to see which devices are assigned to which player and toggle “share keyboard/mouse” or “share controllers” if needed.
Practical setup ideas for Storm Lancers:
- Host on keyboard and mouse, guest on a controller.
-
Both players on controllers if your friend is on PC, Steam Deck, or a device running Steam Link.
If the game does not detect inputs from your guest:- Check that their controller is detected by their device and Steam/Steam Link.
- Reopen the Remote Play Together panel and confirm the controller is shared to the guest.
- From Storm Lancers’ main menu, back out to controller configuration if provided and re‑scan inputs.
Step 5 – Start Your Co‑op Run in Storm Lancers
With Remote Play Together active and controllers mapped, you are ready to start a co‑op run.
- From the Storm Lancers main menu, confirm both players have joined the co‑op mode (e.g., both character slots show up).
- Launch a new run or continue where you left off.
- Play as normal; reviving each other, sharing resources, and coordinating builds works just like split‑screen couch co‑op, but now over the internet.
Because Storm Lancers allows you to switch between co‑op and solo by returning to the menu, the host can stop Remote Play and continue solo if the guest needs to leave, then invite them again for a later session.
Tips for the Best Remote Co‑op Experience
To make Storm Lancers feel as close as possible to playing on the same couch, use these tweaks.
Performance and network:
- In Steam > Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options, lower the resolution or enable “Fast” or “Balanced” quality profiles if your upload speed is limited.
- Use wired Ethernet where possible on the host machine and keep the guest near their router or on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi.
Audio and communication:
- Enable Steam voice chat with your friend so you can coordinate dodges, revives, and weapon choices.
- Use headsets to avoid your friend hearing their own audio back through your microphone.
Gameplay guidelines specific to Storm Lancers:
- The game features permanent upgrades and a variety of weapons, so talk about who is focusing on crowd control vs. single‑target damage to complement each other.
- When reviving each other, remember that revives cost part of your health, so communicate before committing.
- Consider having the more experienced player host to keep the frame rate and pacing as smooth as possible.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
If something goes wrong, these checks often fix it quickly.
No video or black screen for guest:
- Ensure the host is actually in‑game and not minimized to the desktop.
- In the Remote Play settings, try disabling hardware decoding for the guest or lowering the stream resolution.
Input lag or stutter:
- Lower the streaming quality and resolution in Remote Play host settings.
- Close bandwidth‑heavy apps (downloads, streams, cloud sync) on the host network.
-
If possible, move both players closer to their routers or switch to wired.
Friend cannot join:
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled in Settings on the host account.
- Make sure the friend is logged in and online in Steam, or that they open the invite link through Steam or Steam Link.
- If the session bugs out, stop Remote Play (right‑click friend > Remote Play Together > Stop), then send a fresh invite.
